How to clean sterling silver jewelry with gemstones

Artisan Tips for Lasting Beauty

There’s a certain soul in hand-crafted silver jewelry, especially when it carries the weight and color of gemstones. Each piece tells a story—of rugged tools, fire and metal, patience, and artistry. At Jennifer Favour Jewelry, each item is crafted to stand the test of time, but even the most resilient materials need a little care now and then. Knowing how to clean sterling silver set with gemstones—safely and simply—will help your piece stay as stunning as the day you first wore it.

Know Your Gemstones

First things first: not all gemstones are created equal when it comes to cleaning. Some are hard and stable (like garnet or quartz), while others are porous, soft, or treated (like turquoise, opal, or lapis lazuli). If you’re ever unsure, treat your jewelry as if it’s delicate. It’s better to go gentle than to risk damage.

The No-Fail Method: Mild Soap & Water

This is the safest method and the one I recommend most often:

• Fill a bowl with lukewarm water and a few drops of mild dish soap.

• Dip a soft cloth or baby toothbrush into the mixture and gently clean the silver, avoiding direct scrubbing on the stone.

• Rinse with clean water.

• Pat dry with a soft cloth—never paper towels, which can scratch.

Avoid soaking jewelry with porous stones or glued settings. A quick, careful wipe is always better.

Use a Silver Polishing Cloth

A silver polishing cloth is a gentle way to remove tarnish from the metal without disturbing the stones. Rub the silver portions only, avoiding the gemstones entirely. This is especially helpful for pieces with intricate details or textures.

DIY Anti-Tarnish Dip (Use With Caution)

This method is effective but should be reserved for jewelry without delicate stones or specialty patina or finishes.

• Line a bowl with aluminum foil.

• Add hot (not boiling) water, a tablespoon of baking soda, and a pinch of salt.

• Briefly dip the jewelry—just a few seconds.

• Rinse and dry immediately.

Do not use this method if your jewelry includes turquoise, pearls, opals, or anything glued. It can damage the stones or loosen settings.

What to Avoid

• Ultrasonic cleaners: They can crack or shake stones loose.

• Harsh chemicals: Bleach, ammonia, toothpaste—all too abrasive and tub dunks with harsh chemical are really risky.

• Soaking fragile stones: Especially anything porous or treated.

• Paper towels: They can scratch the silver surface.

Store with Care

How you store your jewelry matters just as much as how you clean it:

• Keep pieces in airtight bags or anti-tarnish pouches.

• Use silica gel packs in your jewelry box to reduce moisture.

• Store in a cool, dry place—never the bathroom.

When to Call a Professional

If a piece has sentimental value, is heavily tarnished, or you’re unsure about the type of stone, it’s always best to have it cleaned by a professional.
